Game server glossary

Plain-language definitions of the words you meet when you look for, join or run a game server. Each entry starts with the short answer.

A

Anti-cheat Administration
Software that detects and blocks unfair advantages such as hacked clients, aimbots or wall hacks. Servers run it on the server side, the client side, or both.

B

Bump Directory
An action that moves a server listing back to the top of a list for a limited time. Directories usually apply a cooldown so one server cannot bump constantly.

C

Creative Gameplay
A game mode with unlimited resources and free building, usually without survival risks. Servers often use it for build contests and plot worlds.

D

DDoS protection Hosting
Network filtering that keeps a server reachable during a distributed denial-of-service attack, in which many machines flood it with traffic. Game hosts often include it in their plans.
Dedicated server Hosting
A program (or a physical machine running it) that only hosts a game world for other players, instead of the host also playing on it. It normally runs around the clock.
Discord Community
A voice and text chat platform used by most game communities. Many servers link their Discord for announcements, support tickets, whitelist applications and vote rewards.

F

Factions Gameplay
A multiplayer mode where players form factions, claim land and fight other factions for control of territory and resources.

G

Griefing Administration
Deliberately destroying or stealing other players' builds or items to spoil their game. Most servers ban it in their rules and log block changes to reverse it.

H

Hardcore Gameplay
A difficulty setting where death is permanent for that character or world. Servers may also use it as a rule set with a single life.
Hosting Hosting
Renting the machine and network connection on which a game server runs. Options range from shared game panels to virtual private servers and dedicated hardware.

I

IP address Connecting
The numeric or domain address players type into the game to reach a server, often followed by a port number, for example play.example.com:25565.

L

Lag Performance
A noticeable delay or stutter caused by high latency, packet loss, or a server that cannot keep up with its workload.
Latency Performance
The time a data packet needs to travel between a player and the server, measured in milliseconds. Lower latency means more responsive gameplay.
Listing Directory
An entry in a server directory that shows a server's name, address, description, player count, tags and rating so players can find and join it.

M

Map wipe Administration
A scheduled reset of a server's world and progress, common in survival games such as Rust, where it starts a new competitive cycle.
Minigames Gameplay
Short, rule-based matches such as spleef, bed wars or capture the flag, usually hosted together on one server with a lobby that connects them.
Mod Modding
A modification that changes or extends a game by altering its files or code. Mods can add items, mechanics or entire game modes and must usually be installed by players too.
Modded server Modding
A server that runs one or more mods or a modpack, so players need a matching client setup to join.
Modpack Modding
A curated bundle of mods, configuration files and sometimes custom resources that are designed to work together and are installed as one package.
MOTD Connecting
Message of the day. The short text shown under a server's name in the multiplayer list, often used for slogans, version info or events.

O

Operator (OP) Administration
A player with elevated permissions who can run administrative commands. Servers grant it sparingly, and usually use a permission plugin for finer control.

P

Permissions Administration
Rules that define what commands and actions each player or group is allowed to use. Permission systems let owners create ranks such as member, moderator and admin.
Ping Performance
A test of the round-trip time between a player and a server, shown in milliseconds. In game lists it is a quick indicator of connection quality.
Player count Directory
The number of players currently connected compared with the maximum the server allows, for example 42/100. Directories refresh it regularly.
Plugin Modding
A server-side add-on that changes how a server behaves, such as adding commands, economy or land protection. Players do not need to install anything to use it.
Port Connecting
A number that identifies which service on a machine a connection is meant for. Each game has a default port, and a host can run several servers using different ports.
PvE Gameplay
Player versus environment. Gameplay focused on cooperating against computer-controlled enemies and world challenges instead of other players.
PvP Gameplay
Player versus player. Gameplay where players can fight each other, either everywhere on the server or only in dedicated areas or modes.

R

Ranking Directory
The order in which a directory shows servers, based on factors such as votes, activity and recency.
Resource pack Modding
A set of textures, sounds and other assets that changes a game's look and feel. Servers can suggest or require one when a player joins.
Roleplay (RP) Gameplay
A style of play where participants act as characters within a story or setting, following rules that keep the fiction consistent.

S

Skyblock Gameplay
A survival variant where players start on a small floating island with limited resources and expand it step by step.
SMP Gameplay
Survival multiplayer. A server where many players share one persistent survival world, often with light rules and a tight-knit community.
Survival Gameplay
A game mode where players gather resources, craft items and manage health and hunger while dealing with threats.

T

TPS Performance
Ticks per second. How many game updates the server processes each second; most games target a fixed value such as 20. A lower TPS means the server is overloaded and gameplay slows down.

U

Uptime Performance
The share of time a server is online and reachable, usually shown as a percentage. High uptime means fewer interruptions for players.

V

Vanilla Gameplay
A server running the unmodified base game with no mods, and often none or few plugins, so it plays as the developers designed it.
Vote Directory
A player's daily endorsement of a server on a directory. Votes raise a server's ranking, and many servers reward voters with in-game items.
Vote reward Community
An in-game prize such as currency or items that a server gives to players who vote for it on a directory.

W

Whitelist Administration
A list of approved players; only accounts on it can join the server. It is used to keep out strangers and to run private or application-based communities.
Wipe Administration
Erasing a server's data, such as the world, inventories or progress, so everyone starts again.
